Roller Kiln Width vs Length: The Smarter Way to Add Capacity

For years the usual way to increase kiln capacity was to make kilns longer. Today many plants choose wider kilns instead. Here is why, and what has to be engineered correctly for a wide kiln to work.

Capacity comes from area, not just length

The tiles inside a kiln at any moment cover an area of roughly width × length. Doubling the width doubles that area, just as doubling the length does, but the two options have very different consequences for the plant.

Advantages of a wider kiln

  • Shorter building. A kiln hall several hundred metres long is costly. A wider kiln delivers the same output in a shorter hall.
  • Lower heat loss per square metre. Heat escapes through the kiln walls and roof. When the kiln is wider, the wall area per square metre of tile is smaller, so fuel per m² goes down.
  • One kiln instead of two. A single wide kiln can replace two narrower kilns, with one set of controls, one crew and less maintenance.

The engineering challenges

  • Even temperature across the width. Tiles at the edges must fire exactly like those in the centre. This requires carefully designed burners, air flows and zone-by-zone digital control.
  • Long rollers at high temperature. Rollers must span the full width without sagging. Roller quality, diameter and drive design all matter.
  • Loading the full width. The lines before and after the kiln must feed and remove tiles across the whole width at the right speed.

Our approach

Jayganesh Machinery's ultra-wide roller kiln is designed around these challenges, with digital management of every burner set and a heavy-duty roller drive. Talk to our engineers about whether a wider kiln suits your plant.
